was born 1959 and raised in Schaan/Liechtenstein. She lived in Basel, Switzerland for many years and for several years in the US. Since 2005 she lives with her family in Maidenhead and paints and teaches in her artist’s studio in Bracknell.
The smell of oil paint coming from her father’s modest studio during her childhood formed her desire to paint, create and understand art . Nevertheless, it wasn’t before she moved to the US in 1987 that lectures in Art History at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign inspired and enriched her. From this moment on she continuously developed her techniques and style.
1992-1993 she lived in California where Rebecca Alzofon (abstract painting and composition), Joseph Zirker (experimental waterbased monoprints) and Jean Packard (cubism) were her teachers who influenced and shaped her most. Leta Peer (abstract painting) and Marianne Flury (material and technique as well as life studies) did the same in Basel. After moving to England in 2005 she continued with life studies and traditional printmaking. Since 2009 she has been taking courses in experimental digital printmaking with Janet Curley Cannon and is now on her way to develop an all-integrational style.
2000-2005: Continuous formation in Arts Management at the University of Berne and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur. Degree: Master of Applied Sciences in Arts Management.
The challenge of capturing motion in an image e.g. dance combined with evoking emotions has been her special interest for many years.
Her works are full of colour and movement, often strongly autobiographical and contain diary-like notes as well as literary citations. Through her noticeable closeness to the written form, her works combine linear sketch-type approaches with painting. In her newest works her paintings meet the digital world and lead her beyond the obvious and expected.
Her opus contains non-figurative abstract paintings, drawings and collages on paper, canvas, and wood – some with writings and calligraphic elements, dance and nude studies and sketches and a few installations e.g. “Augenblicke “, a portrait installation, “Crystal Wishes”, made of a broken shop window and Japanese lace paper and “Winged Memories” with glass and slides.
Rebekka Alzofon wrote on the art of Angelika Steiger–Wanger: “The paintings express an honesty that pushes past the personal and arrives, by natural course, at the universal. Always, these paintings provide places of retreat and personal reflection for the thoughtful viewer. Like the complex universe from which they came, Angelika Steiger`s paintings can be explored with endless satisfactions.”
In 1993 her first solo exhibition took place in the Altesse Art Gallery in Liechtenstein. Numerous exhibitions followed in Switzerland, Liechtenstein in the US, Germany, England and – as early as 1995 – on the web.
• Art bursaries from the Cultural Funds of the Principality of Liechtenstein, 1997, 2007 and 2010
• Her art works are to be found in private collections in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Great Britain and the US.
• Since 1992 several acquisitions by corporations such as Novartis AG, Basel and UBS, Zurich and various doctors` surgeries, architect and trust offices.
• Several art works were acquired publicly (Arlesheim 1998 and 2005, Bettmeralp/Valais 2000, and Basel 2001.
